From January to September of 2013, total online retail sales in Beijing exceeded 63.73 billion yuan, accounting for 40 yuan out of every 100 spent by consumers, China News Agency reported.
Revenue from online retail now surpasses that from brick-and-mortar stores, automotive and F&B. Lin Ya, secretary of the Beijing E-commerce Association, said, "Online retail encourages consumers to spend more money."
In 2011, total revenue from online retail was 29.87 billion yuan. Last year, the total rose to 59.68 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 99.8 percent.
In the most recent three months of 2013, 49.13 billion yuan was earned by 30 or so Beijing-based e-businesses, a group that includes jd.com, gome.com.cn and vancl.com.
